In partnership with Jana Sanskriti Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed of India the Theatre of the Oppressed methodology was employed to work with and document a small group of landless day laborers in the 24 South Parganas of West Bengal. The practice offers a space for the oppressed to embody their social experience through theatrical play. With the aim to generate a culture of constructive dialogue to mitigate social, economic, and political oppression, the 24 South Paraganas is a documentary photo series collaboratively developed and used as an expressive tool by the community. The product shows how a small group of artists have risked their lives to promote human rights in a locality fractured by political extremism, governmental corruption, and antiquated social hierarchies.
